The female-fronted caper film “Ocean’s 8” walked away with the box-office crown in its opening weekend, grossing a cool $41.5 million.

The previous trio of movies, starring George Clooney and Matt Damon, never topped $39 million in their debut weekends.

“Solo” continued to disappoint for Walt Disney Co. DIS, +1.47%[4]   and Lucasfilm, earning $15.2 million in its third weekend. The R-rated superhero sequel “Deadpool 2,” from 21st Century Fox’s FOX, +0.82%[5]   Twentieth Century Fox, finished third, with $13.7 million in its fourth weekend and $278.7 million overall.

The horror thriller “Hereditary” was a hit in its debut, earning $13 million, a record for indie distributor A24. The film, starring Toni Collette, was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and appears to have been boosted by positive word of mouth....
