SINGAPORE — President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un shook hands at a summit in this city state, a landmark moment in an ambitious and uncertain bid to bring about nuclear disarmament.

The two men, who spent months trading insults, settled in for what was expected to be hours of meetings — aides said no time limits had been set — at about 9 a.m. in Singapore on Tuesday, or 9 p.m. Eastern time Monday.

After a lengthy handshake, the two leaders exchanged a few words and posed side by side for news cameras before settling in for what is expected to be hours of meetings — aides said no time limits had been set.

“We’re going to have a great discussion,” Trump said. “It’s my honor and we will have a terrific relationship, I have no doubt.” Kim said that “old prejudices and practices worked as obstacles in our way forward, but we overcame all of them and we are here today.”

The unprecedented meeting between the two leaders is enough for each side to claim an achievement. Trump became the only sitting U.S. president ever to meet with a North Korean leader and Kim cemented his place on the world stage. Trump was upbeat ahead of the encounter, writing on Twitter: “We will all know soon whether or not a real deal, unlike those of the past, can happen!”
