WASHINGTON — Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s former longtime lawyer, resigned from his post as national deputy finance chairman at the Republican National Committee on Wednesday, according to an RNC official, saying the investigations into his contacts with Russia and his business dealings were proving too great a distraction.
In a letter to RNC Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel, Cohen wrote: “This important role requires the full time, attention and dedication of each member.” Referring to the continuing investigations, he said: “That simply is impossible for me to do.”
Cohen also criticized the Trump administration’s policy separating immigrant families at the southern border. Trump on Wednesday signed an order to “keep families together.”
“I cannot personally support a zero tolerance immigration policy that permits thousands of innocent children being separated from their parents,” Cohen wrote, in his first public criticism of his former boss. “As the son of a Polish Holocaust survivor, the images and sounds of this family separation policy [are] heart wrenching. While I strongly support measures that will secure our porous borders, children should never be used as bargaining chips.”
