BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Democratic Congressman Peter Welch[1] has visited a children’s detention center in Texas as critics have been railing against President Donald Trump’s move separating immigrant parents from their children on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Welch[2] told WCAX-TV that “it’s just appalling and unconscionable action.”

Nearly 2,000 children have been taken from their parents since Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the “zero-tolerance” policy, which directs Homeland Security officials to refer all cases of illegal entry into the United States for prosecution.

Welch[3] was in Texas on Sunday with a half dozen other lawmakers.

The administration says the changes are necessary to deter immigrants from coming to this country illegally.
