The Democratic National Committee and Sen. Elizabeth Warren[1] began fundraising shortly after Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy announced his retirement Wednesday, telling voters they must donate ahead of the midterm elections.
Tom Perez, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said in the fundraising email that lawmakers must reject a Supreme Court nominee who would not uphold Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court case that legalized abortion in 1973.
He said elections have consequences and blamed Republicans for holding the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s seat vacant for more than a year, refusing to allow President Obama’s nominee to have a hearing or a vote.
The move allowed President Trump a chance to nominate Justice Neil M. Gorsuch to the court.
“We cannot let that happen again. This November, you won’t just be deciding the next Congress, you will be deciding the direction America goes in for the next half-century,” said Mr. Perez.
Ms. Warren[2], who is rumored to be a top 2020 presidential contender for the Democratic party, also blasted out a fundraising email, telling her supporters to donate in order to fight for the Senate....
“The stakes for Democratic control of the Senate have never been higher. Women’s rights, equal rights and health care are on the line,” she said.
