LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas’ attorney general says a state lawmaker who was arrested after authorities said he didn’t file an income tax return for 15 years should resign from the House.

Attorney General Leslie Rutledge told reporters Friday she believes fellow Republican and state Rep. Mickey Gates[1] should resign after he was arrested on six felony counts of failing to file or pay an income tax return. Gates[2] was arrested on Thursday after authorities said he owed Arkansas nearly $260,000 in back taxes, penalties and interest.

Other top Republicans have called the charges against Gates[3] serious but have stopped short of calling for his resignation. Top Democrats, including the chairman of the state party, have called for Gates[4] to resign. Gates[5]‘ attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
